Lehigh Valley Hospital & Health Network Deploys New Technology for Faster Access to Total Clinical Record

Fusion from Carefx Increases Productivity, Improves Efficacy and Patient Safety

(Scottsdale AZ) - June 28, 2006 -- Carefx Corporation today announced that Lehigh Valley Hospital & Health Network (LVHHN) in Allentown Pa. has deployed Fusion from Carefx™ to deliver fast, secure access to complete patient data across the hospital’s multiple locations. Carefx provides physicians, coders and support staff with access to vital patient information in a unified view from many workstations in the 800+ bed network. This, in-turn, will improve patient safety and boost clinician efficiency.

Fully integrated with CA’s eTrust® Single Sign-On solution, Fusion streamlines the clinician’s workflow and reduces the potential for error by presenting patient medical data in various applications throughout the network. By toggling between applications, with patient context sharing, the potential of incorrectly identifying patients between applications is greatly reduced.

LVHHN is one of the largest and oldest licensed teaching hospitals in Pennsylvania and one of the first “true” digital hospitals in the nation, meaning it makes full use of the latest computerized technology to improve care and ensure patient safety. Over the past five years, LVHHN has invested more than $51.1 million to provide systems that increase efficiency, improve accuracy and reduce medical errors. The hospital has been ranked for ten consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top providers in the nation. For the past five years LVHHN was named to Hospitals & Health Networks Most Wired Magazine’s annual list of the “100 most wired hospitals and health systems” and for the past two years ranked in the top ten nationally among Verispan IHN 100 most integrated health networks.

“LVHHN is committed to enterprise-wide integration and to providing best-of-breed technologies so our clinicians and staff can deliver the highest level of care,” states Harry Lukens, LVHHN senior vice president and CIO. “We were looking to implement a solution to decrease (or reduce) the access time-to-data as a means to assist our physicians with diagnosing and treating their patients. LVHHN initially installed a competing solution to address the time-to-data issue, but soon found that due to its proprietary architecture, it lacked the flexibility needed to meet our requirements and expectations. With Fusion, in a short period of time, we were able to implement and deploy an integrated solution, at a reasonable expense level. We believe that the value of the Carefx solution will not only benefit our clinical departments, but our physician offices and medical records department across our entire network.”

Designed to enhance LVHHN’s existing investment in CA’s single sign-on technology, Fusion seamlessly aggregates patient data from diverse applications and databases––including clinical documentation and lab results––in order to give clinicians and staff the full picture of a patient’s clinical record. With Fusion, data is aggregated at the user-interface level, removing the cost-intensive, resource-draining effort of back-end data integration. After a clinician logs into an individual application and selects a patient, Fusion automatically finds and links related patient information in various applications which facilitates navigational effectiveness. This, in turn, increases patient safety. LVHHN has implemented the Fusion Desktop solution to integrate GE IDX LastWord and the McKesson Horizon patient folder for coders in the Health Information Management department and GE IDX ImageCast and GE IDX LastWord for technicians and support staff in the Radiology Department. This initial deployment took just six weeks from start to finish. Additional applications for the clinical departments will be integrated over the next several weeks.

CA has certified Fusion as interoperable with eTrust Single Sign-On, a core component of its industry-leading Identity and Access Management solutions. eTrust Single Sign-On provides secure, simplified access to multiple applications that allows hospital staff fast and efficient access to patient information while facilitating HIPAA security compliance.

“Lehigh Valley Hospital & Health Network is the latest successful collaboration between CA and Carefx and demonstrates the seamless interoperability we have developed between CA’s security management software and Fusion,” said Michael McDermand, vice president of Healthcare Solutions at CA. “CA and Carefx deliver a comprehensive identity and access management platform to provide clinicians and staff with secure, timely access to information that enables them to deliver superior patient care.”

“Lehigh Valley Hospital & Health Network has established a long tradition of excellence and innovation in healthcare by embracing a best-of-breed IT philosophy and making strategic investments in solutions that enable physicians and staff to meet the ever-evolving health care needs of their patients,” said Andrew Hurd, Chairman and CEO of Carefx. “LVHHN recognized that timely and simplified access to a patient’s complete clinical record is at the heart of quality care and patient safety. With Fusion, LVHHN now is able to reduce the ‘time-to-data’ while increasing clinical efficacy and operational efficiency enterprise wide.”
